Don't open the GIF that comes with WhatsApp.. Security researchers warn.

If you haven't recently updated the WhatsApp on your smartphone, security researchers have recommended that you update it immediately.

This is because security researchers have discovered a critical security vulnerability in the popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp.

Security researchers have warned that this particular security loophole allows hackers to access or steal information on your smartphone, and that hackers can snap photos and messages on your smartphone by sending you "infected" GIF files.

Crash to Hack:

Browse on WhatsApp This latest security loophole stems from an event known as "double free vulnerability", which can crash your WhatsApp or give you access to a hacker.

Researchers have explained that only when you open the infected GIF file that comes to you, will it start working, and you will be in no danger if you don't open it.

Don't Share and Open:

Therefore, if you do not update your WhatsApp, you are advised not to share or open any GIF files that are shared.

Status of iOS:

Since this security loophole is only found on WhatsApp's Android based platform, iOS users should not panic.  This does not mean that Android users may panic, simply by updating.

According to security researchers, "The specific security loophole works well with WhatsApp version 2.19.230. Works well on Android 8.1 and 9.0 operating systems, but does not work on OS 8.0 and below. 

Users who use the older Android OS right away, don't worry, you simply update WhatsApp.
